Women's History Month

Untold stories of change makers in conservation and natural history. The AWIS NY-WINS (Women In Natural Sciences) chapter initiated the Untold Stories project to raise awareness of previously unknown change makers in conservation and museum-based natural sciences. They hope that bringing these voices to the foreground and celebrating the lives and legacies of these individuals will be inspirational to current and future generations of scientists. The project includes stories, a gallery, resources, a blog, and more, and is fueled by collaborators from institutions worldwide.

Career Corner

Looking beyond 'academia versus industry.' This new Science careers column reminds scientists to look beyond stereotypes when trying to find the right career fit. Scientists should think about what they want in terms of organization size, risk versus safety, skills they'll use and ones they want to develop, level of challenge, and, of course, factors like location and salary. Browse the postings on the AWIS Career Center to get a feel for the huge variety of industry and academic jobs available.

Minding the Patent Gap. More women are getting patents for their inventions than ever before, but there is still a significant patent gap, which includes gender, race, and income. Learn more about why the patent gap exists and what AWIS is doing to increase patent diversity with partners at Invent Together in our new article on the Nucleus.

The Bottom Line

"Women leaders bring a different perspective to their job. Those that understand what it feels like to be marginalized bring a more inclusive mindset…a mindset that is now scientifically proven to be valuable to organizations in the long run."

—Meredith Gibson, AWIS Interim CEO, is quoted in a new article Breaking the Bias: How Women Are Impacting Male-Dominated Industries.
